Ambrose was a wealthy farmer, mill owner, & North Carolina legislator. According to Marengo Co, AL historian James A. Armistead, Ambrose Knox Ramsey, a pioneer in Marengo history, came to Tuscaloosa & Marengo Co. in the early1830's. At one time Ramsey owned more than 1200 acres of land about 1 mile SE of Old Springhill (just north of Linden).
Armistead writes:
" During the flush times of the 1830's, Ramsey borrowed large sums of money from the Bank of the State of Alabama at Tuscaloosa and the branch bankat Mobile, having as securities on these notes some of the most prominentmen in this country, including Francis S. Lyon and Andrew J. Crawford. Difficulties only encouraged Ramsey to work harder and enter into other ventures. In 1838 he entered into an agreement with 14 prominent men of Tuscaloosa Co. forming a co-partnership for the purpose of buying & selling merchandise, wares
