William Smute/Smoot as a member of the Boatwrights Guield in London in
1633 agreed to perform 50 days of work (boatbuilding) in VA for Col.
Thomas Burbage and shortly (1634) sailed for VA. King James I of England
had died in 1625 leaving the throne to his son Charles I who dissolved
Parliament for 11 years, increased taxes with rising prices and left
common men in distress at the time William left England. At the time he
arrived in VA, the worst problems of colonization were behind and a
population of 3,000 was established, 5,000 in 1645 with rapid growth
thereafter to 22,000 in 1700.
He left VA for Charles Co., MD in 1646 where he established a shipyard on
the west bank of the Wicomico. There were only 400 whites in the Co.
in 1658 and only 2,800 by 1700. In 1790 the total population was 20,600
b&w souls with a rapid decline thereafter especially whites. (The Price
of Nationhood, 1994)
