[5502] 1880 census E.D. 27, Coryell Co., TX, page 490d: Farmer (Parents born SC)
[6036]
Edward Upton was born near London, England. He with another boy ran away from school, meeting the mate of a vessel who needed two cabin boys. They hired to him, and were on his vessel for five years. When at anchor at New York, they swam ashore and hid until the vessel left the harbor. Edward Upton served through the War for Independence, and was present at the surrender of Cornwallis. Here, he met an uncle, who was in the English Army and to him he gave the news to carry back to England informing his parents as to his career and whereabouts. After the war he settled in North Carolina. He married twice and was 108 years old at his death.
Most of the families called Upton originated in the English county of Cornwall where the family settled shortly after the Norman conquest in 1066
