Bancroft and Doris met in 1940. While at her graduation party aboard the Buccaneer Yacht, some of her friends felt the need for them to be introduced. They dated for two years before marrying in 1942. They were married at Dauphin Way Baptist Church by Dr. C.B. Arendall. Bancroft said he was fine, but his best man was so nervous that his tuxedo vest was shaking. They went to Birmingham, Alabama on their honeymoon. Her aunt loaned them her apartment because she was going to be out of town. At night they went out dancing with her cousins. After the honeymoon they came back to Mobile, where he worked as a steamship agent and she worked as an office clerk for Dr. McLeod. Together they enjoy dancing, walking, and he loves to sing love songs.
